In the wild, birds hunt for their food. Though it may be hard to imagine your pet parrots and parakeets foraging for fruits and seeds, that's what they do, and they are genetically predispositioned to forage. So, when we feed them out of little cups and bowls, they are missing something. And, according to veterinarians, they do miss foraging, preferring to work for their food than to have it 'handed to them.'
Not to be omitted, foraging feeders and toys challenge a bird's intelligence.
Here are three fun toys to keep your pet birds busy doing what nature intended.
This foraging wheel is a kick for medium to large pet birds. It's probably too big for most budgies, but for the larger parakeets, such as the Alexandrine or the Rose-Ringed Parakeet, this would be great. And, as you can see, you can put all kinds of nuts, seeds, and fruit in the compartments as long as your bird can access them with her beak. This feeder is 6 x 6 x 1.5 inches and attaches to the side or top of the cage, on the inside or outside. Enough of a challenge without being impossible, the Caitec Creative Foraging Systems Clear Foraging Wheel is a great alternative to cup feeding.
Another foraging feeder for the medium to large pet bird, the Creative Intelligence feeder ball is 4 inches in diameter and has several openings for your bird to extract food - fruit or nuts, for example. It is not meant for seed, but you can put various kinds of food treats in it for your pet birds and just let them roll the ball around until their beaks can reach them. Parakeets can use this ball as well as large parrots, and the ball is exceptionally useful to mentally stimulate young parrots.
As an alternative to food, you can pack the Foraging Ball with other bird-safe shredible material.
The Hamiledyi Food/Toy Bird Foraging Holder is a personal favorite if for no other reason that it keeps spray millet in one place. This is handy if your bird doesn't like to hang on the millet itself. Of course, you can place fruit and nut treats in this holder too, and birds will love to perch or hang on the Foraging Holder while they eat their treats. The Hamiledyi Food/Toy Bird Foraging Holder is complete with hanger and a clip to close the top of the holder. It is just under 10 inches long.
